Remember the Good Old Days?

This week’s episode of “Gloom,” I mean “Glee” was a huge change from last week’s flirty and fun character interactions and music.  This week Glee has managed to make me feel smiley and nauseous all at the same time: an unlikely pairing,   Just like Rachel Berry manages ‘to dress like a third grader and a grandma at the same time’ (thank you Kurt).  Of course Glee had to go over to the bad place where we must deal with subjects of teenage suicide, teen marriage, and a near death car crash.  WOW!  This all happened in one episode.

Like many teenage shows do, I began comparing it to “Bev Hills 90210” (old one obvi) and how the show is still unparalleled in its’ mastery of the teenage television drama.  During 90210’s senior year the gang’s biggest dilemma was whether to go to the Peach Pit or go to the Peach Pit.  Now maybe I’m just partial because I have an affinity for a young group of rich kids (minus Andrea-clearly) hanging out in Beverly Hills where their biggest problem is where to eat and when their next allowance check is coming (again minus Andrea-you can virtually change any of these descriptions and ‘minus Andrea’ will still be there).

I miss the good old days when Brandon was flipping burgers at The Pit and Brenda was deciding if she should stay in LA and go to the coveted CU (ahem…nice one writers, not a real college, you can’t fool me) or go back to Minnesota to pursue an acting major-hello you’re in LA don’t go to Minnesota!  Dylan and Kelly were, to much a viewer’s chagrin, were a couple and fought every two seconds because Kelly was on diet pills that ‘murder your personality’ (she didn’t really need the pills for that, jk Kel).  Every time they fought it would add salt to my wound of Dylan choosing Kelly over Brenda.  Little known secret:  that steamy and exciting plot twist was actually spearheaded by Luke Perry himself.  If you have been following my blog you’ll notice I met the man myself and he divulged some fun secrets of the set.  One was that, in real life Luke and Shannen Doherty were not getting along too well (shocker-that lead to her eventual firing  leaving of the show), the writers were very concerned as to what to do with Brenda and Dylan’s relationship and Luke himself suggested Jennie Garth as his new love interest. WOW. Controversial.  When he told us that, at the luncheon, I was floored!  Although, it did create one of the most talked about love triangles in TV history and I would say pioneered them.  Now every one is always dating someone’s best friend: Gossip Girl: Dan and Blaire?! Glee: Finn and Quinn to Finn and Rachel.  That’s just the beginning.

So, as I was saying, life on 90210 was all fun and games.  Albeit, Steve was on the verge of being expelled for his asinine break in to the school-he managed to even graduate on time and get into CU-ya that makes sense. Hmmm.  Andrea did get hit by a hit and run driver which was pretty serious and hyper dramatized but it’s Andrea so who really cares.  I usually fast forward during her parts anyways.  Donna and David are the only two I haven’t touched upon and they are about as innocent and teenager-esque as they come so their storylines certainly stayed within the lines of the teenage genre.

Basically all these teenage shows are getting so serious so fast now!  Take a lesson from 90210 and get drunk at prom like Donna; then have Brandon mastermind a walk-out on final exams which became infamously known as ‘Donna Martin Graduate,’  which she did of course.

P.S. If you are just reading my blog for the first time except many more blog postings on 90210 on various occasions.

The world as it relates to 90210? So totally tbits. But question please… The curly haired actress who looked 30 from her first episode (insert name here) – what was that all about?? Was she somebody’s aunt or something?? Did somebody in casting owe her $$$?
