Top 10 NYFW Moments this Year!

New York Fashion Week isn’t all about the fashion: the people and the moments make up a large portion of the week.  Whether it be the celebrities, the stylists, the bloggers, the designers themselves or a new trend these are the top ten NYFW moments this year:

1.  Leandra Medine is her usually repelling self.  I use the word ‘repel’ with the utmost respect. Leandra is the sassy voice behind fashion blog: The Man Repeller and it wouldn’t be fashion week without her pithy updates via social media. This year she’s coveting crops tops, Manolo Blahnik see through booties and attending shows in long T-shirts and stilettos.  Very MR-esque.

2.  The only person who can make Anna Wintour smile is the mini version of Victoria Beckham and that’s her daughter Harper. This pic is beyond adorable with Harper on her dad’s lap while captivating Anna’s attention.

3.  Lots of nail art!  This year we have seen a whole new kind of trend on the runway and I’m not just talking about the modern fanny pack (a la Tory Burch), I’m talking about nail art.  Labels like OPI and Essie teamed up with fashion designers to do manicures and pedicures for the models in the show and they are creating unique colors and designs for the nails.  See moon manis, glitter, and the unconventional french tip!

 4.  Celebrities got the walk!  This year we have seen quite a few celebs walk the final looks on the runway-Naomi Campbell at DVF and Rita Ora at DKNY.

5.  Kanye West sat front row at the Alexander Wang show sans his baby mama and newborn baby North West. Hmmm, didn’t take Kanye long to high-tail it out of LA to NYC.   Kanye is a self-proclaimed fashionisto. (Yes, I made up that word: it’s the male version of ‘fashionista.’)  Kanye believes that because he’s chummy with Anna Wintour and directs bizarre fashion photo shoots with Karl Lagerfeld, starring his pregnant baby mama wearing a grill, that he knows fashion. I’m still not convinced.

6.  Lots and lots of brunch and coffee posts.  It wouldn’t be NYFW without every blogger tweeting and posting to Instagram their brunch pics from the cutest spots in NYC.  Notable brunch spots include Peels (East Village), Buvette (West Village), Extra Virgin (West Village).  All great NYC eateries!

7.  Editor and celebrity stylist street sightings!  NYFW truly is the great equalizer in some ways. Yes, all the important people sit front row and get special treatment but when it comes to getting somewhere on time, there is no better transportation than the subway or just walking there!   Celebrity stylist: Brad Goreski hightails it on the subway in a pinch to get to his next show and Vogue creative director: Grace Coddington is seen walking to Lincoln Center with her Starbucks in hand. They’re people, just like us

8.  Rachel Zoe’s favorite accessory: Baby Skylar!  Rachel Zoe is never one to miss a fashion moment and now that she has had her eponymous collection for a few seasons she not only basks in her styling glory but also that of designing.  Perhaps her favorite job is being a mother though.  Baby Skylar is always fashionably perched on his mom’s hip at the end of her shows.

9.  Swag and Parties.  Fashion week is all about the free swag for stylist, bloggers, and celebs.  And where there’s swag, there is always a party.  Many after parties follow the runway presentations and the team of designers finally get to have a good time.

10.  That’s a wrap: everything starts to wind down!  With fashion week coming to an end this week, it certainly has been a whirlwind!  Even if you didn’t attend you can get the idea of the chaos that surrounds the week.  With social media keeping everyone in the loop, fashion has become more accessible than ever.  From my experience in the few fashion weeks I’ve worked, I can tell you that the craziness is real: late nights working to bring pieces together, people everywhere, celebrities, editors filling the streets. It’s chaotic, but it’s some of the best chaos there is!  See you in Winter 2014, NYFW!
