How to Wear Shorts with Tights in the Winter

Looking to wear those shorts in the winter?

Wearing shorts in the winter is very stylish and fashion forward – taking a piece that is traditionally for summer and styling it for winter – is fashion creativity at its best!

Wearing shorts in the winter became more and more popular as opaque tights appeared on the fashion scene. Spanx being one of the leaders in creating durable and fashionable opaque tights – that could keep you warm while wearing a pair of shorts!

Wearing shorts in the winter comes down to two simple concepts: wear opaque tights or leggings with a short that is made from a winter material.

Think: wool, velvet, pleather, leather – these are all materials that are perfect for you winter outfits. The sturdiness of the material is perfect for winter.

Another tip: go with a dark color: navy, black, purple, blue. dark grey, maroon – not to make winter sound morose but normally – in winter – the colors veer on the darker side which make a piece like shorts palatable for this time of year.

Pops of color in the winter are great but I would leave that to a hat or a shoe – not the shorts.

In certain parts of the world – it can stay cold longer than others: parts of Europe, New York City, the midwest – so it’s always fun to incorporate pieces that would not traditionally be worn during this time of year.

See how I have incorporated shorts into my everyday winter outfit below. ย

(Little known secret, about me, is that I love wearing shorts. I don’t care which season I’m in, I’ll find a way to wear them.)

These shorts are perfect for winter as i mentioned because of the heavier material they are made from wool make and are navy blue color.

When I think of shorts, I normally think of paring them with some kind of tight tank top or short sleeved top but for winter, pairing them with a fitted or oversized sweater is the perfect solution to looking chic and staying warm.

I recently stumbled upon an Ann Taylor LOFT after getting my hair styled (shout out to Butterfly Studios in NYC) and much to my surprise I found some amazing pieces.

Talk about a re-brand!  They are cornering the basic chic market.  The sweaters and pants are simple but fit well and can be mixed and matched with designer pieces.

As I did with this look, I paired the LOFT sweater with shorts by O’2nd (from INTERMIX), Loeffler Randal heels and upscale accessories.

If you follow me on Instagram, you may recognize my sunglasses–I have been wearing them pretty religiously since I got them and the red frames always seem to outline every look so beautifully.

The last detail of this look, that I am excited to share, is the two-pronged gold ring that is featured, up-close, in the last photo.  It is by Vita Fede and I love its daintiness.  I have an affinity for two-pronged rings to begin with and this one, in particular, is a great piece to wear alone or with a few other rings.
