Dresses to Wear to a Fall Wedding

Coming into the fall months: September, October and November – there will be plenty of weddings to attend and you’ll need a dress for each!

Weddings in the fall offer a lot of opportunities to wear all different kinds of dresses – especially depending on the city where the wedding will be

Whether you’re attending a wedding in NYC in September or Miami in October – this style guide has you covered when it comes to dresses to wear for a fall wedding.

Try a dress for September, October or a November wedding in these different cities – each is perfect for that time or year and are unique the city the wedding is being held in.

What to Wear to a Wedding in September, October and November in 5 Different Cities:

1. New York City

NYC is all about a “city” style. It’s sophisticated, edgy, and feminine. An off the shoulders, column dress or a jumpsuit would fit the bill there. Red, navy and other moody colors are perfect for a fall wedding in NYC. If it’s an earlier fall wedding: say September, you can opt for a brighter color.

2. Los Angeles

These styles are also applicable to Southern CA areas like San Diego. Orange County and Santa Barbara. Los Angeles and SoCal in general are all about the casual chic vibes. The style is colorful and flirty and perhaps has a floral or geometric pattern — I tend to gravitate towards styles like these (see this dress here!).

Pro tip: don’t be fooled by the label “casual” because in LA, “casual” actually means: high-end and expensive (cry emoji!!).

3. San Francisco (and Napa):

San Francisco has a more conservative and classic style.

Weddings in San Francisco often take place at the Palace of Fine Arts or in a church: so something long sleeve and floor length is fitting (pardon the pun!).

I just attended a wedding at the Ritz Carlton in San Francisco – and it was all indoor – so you could easily not have to wear a jacket.

Plus: it’s cold in SF year round, so you’ll want a shawl or a wedding appropriate layering piece.

Napa is a huge wedding destination and the fall is one of the loveliest times to visit (it’s their harvest season so all the vines have grapes just ready to be plucked from their trees).

In Napa, you can go more rustic chic with your dress. Go for earthy tones like browns, reds, and oranges. Pick a softer fabric to match the romantic mood that is wine country.

4. Austin

I have never been to a wedding in Austin but since there are a lot of NYC and CA transplants there now, I figure there are many people going to weddings there. I have visited Austin how and my take on the city is a totally laid back, cutesy music loving place.

For a wedding dress there, I would opt for a dress to keep you cool (temperature wise) and also something stylish but kind of funky. You could even wear cowboy boots or an elevated take on a cowboy boot! A wedding here would be a lot of fun.

5. Miami

¡Bienvenidos a Miami!

Yessssss, Miami is a vibe and a wedding there would certainly be an event.

Miami is over the top. Lots of glitz, glam, and sexy! Mini dresses with a halter top detail would definitely be a guest favorite.

Platform heels or sky high Louboutins — make sure that red sole is showing!

I feel like Miami is Florida’s Vegas and basically anything goes when it comes to wardrobe (and probably more)!
