What to do in Santa Barbara in the Winter

The winter months can be gloomy but the best way to cheer yourself up and get through the winter slump is to try a visit to Santa Barbara in the winter.

I took a much needed girl’s trip (Roo being the other girl) to Santa Barbara last winter and it was just what I need – the air was crisp and but the sun was still shining and the Santa Barbara views were perfect.

Also – the acai bowls just taste better in Santa Barbara!

This travel guide to Santa Barbara in the winter will be a great way to start planning your winter escape for January, February or March!

Santa Barbara in the winter

I hadn’t been to SB for nearly 10 years, if not more. When I was attending to UCLA, I would visit there every so often as it’s a short drive from there (about 2 hours with traffic) and I had close friends that attended UCSB. Going back was such a fun jog of my memory and I rediscovered the beautiful little beach town that is Santa Barbara. Plus, I had a blog event with WALT Wines while there: which made it the perfect mix of work with pleasure.

Going to SB from Northern California is a bit more of an adventure as its a 5 hour drive but I was up for it, considering I have a new car and I could bring Roo (it’s a very dog friendly town and so was my hotel!).

So we packed up the car and hit the road.  There is something so gratifying about getting in your car, instead of a plane to travel.  Yes, it took more time but I think it was much more direct.  I can easily bring as much stuff as I need, my dog,  and there are no time constraints. So with that here is a travel diary and highlights from my trip!

5 Things to do in Santa Barbara in February

1. Got to a dog friendly beach or the beach in general

The greater Santa Barbara area from Goleta to Montecito is all beaches and it’s gorgeous.

From what I noticed, dogs are allowed on all beaches but there was one beach: Arroyo Burro that is specifically for dogs and a great place for them to run around!

The images below are from the beach adjacent to the Miramar Rosewood Hotel (gorgeous!). (PSA: the beaches do have tar…some more than others, so be aware of that. You can remove it with baby oil or wear sandals!)

2. Stroll and shop around Downtown Santa Barbara

Downtown’s main attraction is “State Street” packed with restaurants, bars, and stores — a leisurely stroll there is a great way to spend an afternoon.

3. Take a morning swim and Acai bowls

A morning swim is the best way to start the day. Even in the winter – since the pools are heated – you’ll feel so refreshed!

The pool at my hotel – the Leta was heated and super refreshing! Ensconced by palm trees was the perfect view.

There is something about a beach town that just lends itself to Acai bowls: I asked for lots of almond butter on mine!

4. Wine tasting in the winter: a visit to Clos Pepe Vineyards with WALT Wines

The main reason I decided to go to SB was for this event — it was an all day event that started at the Ritz Carlton-Bacara (gorgeous hotel with Spanish architecture) then a tasting at the winery, lunch and live country music! It was a perfect afternoon.

5. Visit the dreamy Rosewood Miramar Beach

I took a majority of my photos at the Miramar which was the perfect backdrop.

Nestled on the beach, the view is pure blue ocean. The decor is East Coast meets laid back beach vibes and it’s just perfect.

Head here for lunch and some drinks with a beautiful beach view!
