The Ultimate Travel Guide for a Summer Vacation in Tahoe
There is nothing better than a summer vacation in Tahoe and as the people of Tahoe would say: Keep Tahoe Blue!
Oh how blue and lovely it is! As I mentioned in my Napa post: drive by markets are having a comeback.
Travel in 2020 has been slightly altered but I have tried to be optimistic and started re exploring the places right in my “backyard,” so to speak.
In May and June, I travelled to Napa (a few times!), Santa Barbara (twice) and in July: Tahoe. This past weekend I spent a night in Santa Cruz and coming up a weekend in Sonoma. Exploring cities in my home state, started as a kind of default travel but I’ve noticed my whole mood and overall mental health is improved by visiting a new space and environment that’s not too far from home.
I also really love my car so driving isn’t a drag (my old car for sure made it less fun). On a lot of these trips, I bring Roo (my dog) as many places are dog friendly.
How Far is Tahoe from San Francisco?
Tahoe is about a 3 1/2 hour drive from the San Francisco Bay Area — so it’s not super close but it’s certainly not far (and to think I hadn’t been since 2012!) — wishing, I had gone more over the years!
For this trip: my friend and fellow blogger, Zia, drove up from LA and we spent a weekend of exploring all over the lake (scouting photos ops of course), swimming, drinking, eating and having fun!
What to do in Tahoe?
1.Visit the Califorina/Nevada Border — take a pic at the Welcome to CA sign or visit CalNeva Resort and see the state border that goes down the middle of the lobby.
2. Sand Harbor Beach — A pristine beach, with a restaurant, bar and clear waters. Tip: get there super early or in the middle of the afternoon: otherwise you won’t get in! The early birds leave mid afternoon and there is a new wave of people and open parking.
3. South Shore Marina and Village — There is a lot to do here: eat, drink, rent paddle boards, kayaks and more.
4. King’s Beach — This beach is on the north side of the lake and has a large beach and swimming area.
5. Emerald Cove — The last image below is overlooking Emerald Cove. It’s a hike to get down there but the water looks so perfectly teal/blue. It’s on the Nevada side.
What to Wear in Tahoe in the summer:
Tahoe is a casual place – with many outdoor activities from water sports to hiking – so there isn’t a need to bring fancy clothes but there are opportunites to dress up for the day and night!
For a day at the beach or pool – have a sun dress and hat on hand and in the evening there are casinos for dinner – where you can wear something glam if you are up for it!
It’s very warm so make sure to wear lightweight fabric to stay cool!
Some clothing ideas for Tahoe:
Bathing suits: Mikoh Bathing Suit | Sandals Ancient Greek Sandals, exact ones here. | Similar Dress: Airy white dress | Hat: Brixton Hat
