“I’ll be Back” (These words were never so true)

Arnold’s infamous phrase: “I’ll be back!” has never rung more in the public’s ear than now. Although, I don’t believe he ever really left; it’s always something with that guy. There has never been a dull moment with him as he outlines his life story in his new book: “Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story;” can’t it just be ‘unbelievable’? Or it has to be ‘unbelievably’? Ugh!

With the press junket for his new book underway he did a somewhat candid interview with Lesley Stahl of 60 Minutes which can only be described as a sociopath’s attempt to make peace with himself. Many of his generic responses such as: “I’m only human,” “Nobody’s perfect” and “That’s the way I handled things, and it always has worked” were lame attempts, at best, to shed some light on why he has made some of the choices he has made.

Sadly, a man like this took years in the making and hearing him describe his upbringing in his Nazi father’s household brings a lot of light to how he became so successful in the US but also why he acts how he does with no remorse. His father beat him with ‘a belt and anything else possible’ and because of that he started to get into body building as a way to channel his energy; the results were imminent. As a part of his obsession with body building, he started to decorate his room with photos of male body builders in their underwear flexing. He describes his parents reaction to this: they thought something was wrong with him and Lesley Stahl (of 60 Minutes) comes to the assumption that his parents thought he was gay. I do believe that his parents thought this and disapproved of it, so he felt he had to prove otherwise to them; hence the womanizing tendencies the rest of his life.

He created goals for himself: once he became a decorated body builder he wanted to become a movie star and even though the Hollywood types thought Woody Allen was more of the star prototype at the time, Arnold persisted and became a blockbuster hit. At that point in his life he and Maria Shriver had been together for about 8 years and decided to marry. The whole concept of marriage must have been lost on Arnold, as he admitted to many affairs with his co-stars. After his Hollywood success, politics were his next move; after all he was married to a member of the Kennedy family. Once again, keeping a big decision very mum, he did not tell his wife that he was running for governor: until three days before his announcement. As his political career came to an end, his biggest scandal came to light when he admitted to fathering a child with the family housekeeper, a secret he had kept hidden for 11 years! Maria opted for divorce and now we have a single Arnold, at 65, writing a book that puts the above into detail.

Lesley Stahl seems to have some control over her disapproval of his ‘character,’ as she puts it, but she makes it quite obvious that his actions are appalling. I couldn’t agree more. The fascinating part, to me, is that he has absolutely no remorse for what he does (which by the way is the basic definition of a sociopath). He clearly states in the interview that he does not dwell on the things he does wrong; he just moves on (paraphrased). When asked by Lesley if he acts as a father figure to his son with the housekeeper he states: “I don’t want to go and get into that. But the important thing you should know is, that everyone should know is, that I take care of him and I take care of her.” Hmmmm. So financially, right? How embarrassing that he can even say something like that and feel no shame. Furthermore, he says having the affair with the housekeeper was the thing he regretted most in his life (paraphrased). Well that’s a nice way to speak about the conception of your child.

He also seems to not care too much for his children with Maria Shriver as this book is just another proclamation of his betrayal and they will have to live it all over again. The icing on the cake is that he is not writing the book for the money (so he says). So why write it Arnie? For the joy that the written word brings to you and others? Please. This is a serious #makeitstop. As Heidi (Klum, duh) would say: Auf Wiedersehen.

Interesting link Joel. Arnold for sure has a valid history but I think his time in the military only further proves the points I made in my blog. Thanks for commenting! I love having a fan base in Poland!
