Fabulous Fall

Fall truly brings its own culture to NYC. After that painfully humid summer and that sexy getaway to the Hamptons, fall comes as a welcome change (even though we are almost fully immersed in winter now). Its crisp air, gorgeous falling leaves, and busy streets exudes what it means to live in NYC in the fall. The most exciting part, to me, however is the blatant change in wardrobe. Bare legs turn into sheer tights, sandals and wedges morph to booties, high boots, or closed toed heels. Low cut tops are now covered with that perfect scarf and that warm coat-and dare I say the perfect fur?? Fur in the Fall/Winter is a NYC staple. Having lived in San Francisco and Los Angeles it is easy to know that fur doesn’t get much action out there. Here are some valid Fall wardrobe questions when the season is turning:
When does tight season start??

I find this a tough one. Coming from moderate weather in CA, tights were never mandatory during the cold season. However, here in NYC, they are and it is always a bit of a struggle to decide when to start wearing them-can it be too soon?? What I have learned is wearing tights is more of a seasonal piece in Fall rather than a judging the weather each morning. Even if it is going to be 65-70 degrees in late Oct- early Nov and no wind: it’s still fall and you kind of have to wear tights. Baring your legs at that point would be a bit of a faux pax. The fun thing about tights though is that they really can add a great element to your outfit so mix it up here and there with a patterned or colored tight.

Scarves, blazers, and coats-oh my!

So in the early Fall a blazer with a light scarf is all you need to keep you warm in that crisp air. A blazer with a loose t-shirt and boyfriend jeans is the perfect fall outfit. The trouble with a blazer only comes in late Nov and early Dec. It is legit cold and a blazer alone will not cut it. So throw on a larger coat over that….it even might be time for those puff coats (ugh). They’re bulky and you appear way bigger than you are but they sure are warm!

Cropped pants or leggings?

So here’s the thing. I love me some J brand cropped pants (see photo) and the transition to leggings with boots is really difficult for me because I generally don’t feel comfortable in boots (at least for a full work day). So as daring as it is to crop your pants and wear a cute flat with them is in the late fall/early winter it worth it. When it is still fall a cropped pant with flats is the perfect outfit.

Flats, boots, or booties?

Flats are great with a dress and tights. This is an easy outfit and your legs are completely covered. Depending on the bootie it can be worn during the say to night. Most of my booties are high and more of a night piece. I do see a lot of people wearing the low heeled booties that kind of come right above your ankle. I’m not a fan. They cut your leg in a very awkward place and no one wants that. I would opt for a pair of high flat boots for the day; they keep you warm and they balance out an outfit that includes a dress with tights or they go over leggings beautifully.

I remember when you were just about to be conceived, how much I loved Carol Little clothes. Is she still around?

Congrats Tillie on your blog & your NY lifestyle! How sweet it is to be a “New Yorker” as Carrie would say…with a wonderful wit, wardrobe & friends to enjoy the best of NYC. Many leave their heart in SF but mine was left in Manhattan many decades ago. Bravo to you! Ed
